Platform Modernisation
We help organisations evolve products that already exist: reducing technical debt, upgrading React and React Native foundations, improving CI/CD and observability, and moving platforms toward architectures that can be operated with confidence.

Algobots Ltd is a UK software engineering consultancy based in Wirral, Merseyside (Established June 2019). We help product and engineering teams build, rescue and modernise mobile apps, web platforms and custom software, UK-wide. This page explains our platform modernisation practice.
Why modernisation is not one project
Platform modernisation is the slow work of making software you already rely on safe to change again. It is triggered by vendor end-of-life notices, store rejection letters, security findings, or simply the feeling that every feature takes three times longer than it should.
Teams sometimes ask for a rewrite. We treat that as one option among many. Strangling legacy modules, upgrading dependencies in place, and improving observability often deliver value sooner than a greenfield bet that duplicates forgotten business rules.
Our method
We map the system as it runs today: user journeys, batch jobs, integrations, and the deploy path. Then we identify constraints: regulatory reporting, peak trading windows, contracts with external integrators. Modernisation plans that ignore constraints fail in production, not in workshops.
For React and React Native estates, we align on a target version and native toolchain, then sequence work so you can ship fixes while upgrades continue on a branch. Parallel CI builds let you compare crash rates before you flip traffic.
Technical debt registers are useful when they tie to customer impact. We prioritise items that reduce incident frequency or unlock product goals, not every smell a linter flags.
Cloud and delivery improvements
Modernisation often includes how software reaches users. Manual deploy checklists get replaced with pipelines, infrastructure moves toward repeatable templates, and monitoring covers the metrics on-call engineers actually need.
We have worked with teams carrying legacy PHP monoliths beside newer services, and with mobile apps pinned to old SDKs because one native module never updated. The pattern is the same: shrink blast radius, measure, then expand scope.
Honest expectations
Velocity may dip before it improves. We say that upfront so product can plan. The alternative, hiding debt until a catastrophic upgrade, is worse for customers and staff morale.
If you want a partner who will tell you when to stop polishing and ship, that is the conversation we prefer. Modernisation should end with your team owning a clearer platform, not a permanent external dependency.
Sectors and constraints we recognise
Retail and travel peaks mean upgrade windows are narrow. Membership organisations must not break renewals during migration. B2B tools with long-lived sessions need careful auth migrations so users are not logged out en masse without warning.
Mainframe or ERP adjacency still appears in mature UK businesses. Modernisation might mean wrapping legacy APIs with a clearer service layer rather than replacing the ERP. We respect that reality instead of selling cloud-native purity.
Open-source end-of-life notices for runtime versions trigger panic. We build timeboxed spike branches to measure effort before executives promise customers impossible dates. Evidence beats optimism.
Observability improvements often accompany code upgrades. If you cannot see errors, you cannot prove modernisation helped. We align metrics with customer support categories so improvements show up where users notice.
Partner with us for a roadmap review, a dedicated upgrade squad, or periodic health checks after you have shipped the heavy lifting. Each mode has different pricing and we explain that openly on a discovery call.
Starting a conversation
Bring a one-page summary of users, platforms and the decision that hurts today. Links to crash dashboards, architecture sketches or a repo readme save time in the first call. We do not need NDAs for an initial chat, though we sign them when required for deeper audits.
Expect straight answers about fit. If another partner is better suited, we say so. When we proceed, the first deliverable is usually a scoped proposal: outcomes, assumptions, rough timeline and what we need from your team weekly.
Engagements are invoiced in GBP with clear milestones. We work with procurement teams who need purchase orders and with founders who prefer lightweight email agreements. The mechanics are flexible; the engineering standard is not.
Documentation and handover are part of delivery, not an optional extra. Your team should be able to operate the result without us in the loop for daily fixes, unless you choose retained support.
What we need from your side
Access to repositories, CI, crash reporting and someone who knows recent release history. Product input for prioritisation and a single decision maker for scope changes keeps momentum. Security reviews are normal for enterprise clients; we provide statements of work and can work with your IT contacts.
We align with your sprint cadence where possible. Fixed-date marketing launches still happen; tell us early so upgrade work does not collide with immovable deadlines. Honesty about trade-offs protects customers and staff.
Most programmes benefit from a short retrospective after the first milestone. Capture what to repeat and what to fix in tooling. That habit pays back on the next upgrade cycle.
We publish no vanity metrics on this site. Outcomes depend on your starting point, team capacity and how boldly you fund maintenance alongside features.
Record decisions in your wiki or ADRs as you go. Future upgrades are cheaper when the last one was documented honestly, including dead ends.

FAQ
Common questions
Do you recommend big-bang rewrites?
Rarely. We look for seams where you can upgrade dependencies, extract modules or strangle legacy features while revenue keeps flowing.
Our React Native version is years behind. Is that fixable?
Usually, if you accept a sequenced plan. Native modules and custom Gradle or Xcode settings often dictate the pace more than JavaScript libraries.
How do you measure modernisation progress?
Leading indicators: build time, crash-free sessions, deploy frequency and mean time to recover. We agree metrics with you before work starts so progress is visible to non-engineers.
Can modernisation run alongside feature work?
That is the norm. We time-box upgrade work per sprint or release train so product commitments do not vanish, though you may temporarily slow feature throughput.
